Preparing for a divorce consultation: what to bring
Make the most of your first meeting with a family lawyer — the documents and questions to prepare.
A first consultation is more useful when you arrive prepared. You do not need everything on this list — bring what you can, and your lawyer will help with the rest.
Documents
- Marriage certificate (or details of the customary or Islamic marriage).
- Children’s birth certificates.
- Any court papers you have received.
- A list of assets and debts — property, businesses, accounts, pensions, vehicles.
- Recent evidence of income for both spouses, if available.
Information to think about
- When the marriage began and when you separated (if you have).
- The key reasons the marriage has broken down.
- Your priorities for the children.
- What you need financially, now and in the future.
Questions to ask
- What are my options — and is mediation suitable?
- How long might the process take?
- What can I do now to protect the children and assets?
- What will it cost?
