How we use your information
- To respond to your enquiry and arrange consultations.
- To provide access to member guides and manage your account.
- To send our newsletter, where you have asked to receive it.
- To keep the website secure and prevent misuse.
- To meet our legal and professional obligations.
Lawful basis
We rely on your consent (for example, newsletter subscriptions), on steps taken at your request before engagement (enquiries and bookings), on our legitimate interests in running a secure and useful website, and on legal obligations where they apply. You can withdraw consent at any time.
Sharing your information
We do not sell your information. We share it only with service providers who help us run the website and our communications — such as our web host, email provider and, where enabled, the AI service that powers the chat assistant — under appropriate confidentiality and data-protection terms, or where the law requires it.
International transfers
Some service providers may process data outside Nigeria. Where they do, we take the steps required by the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 to make sure your information remains protected.
How long we keep it
- Enquiries and booking requests that do not become instructions: up to two years.
- Client matters: for the period required by our professional and legal obligations.
- Newsletter: until you unsubscribe.
- Chat assistant messages: up to twelve months.
Security
The website uses encrypted connections (HTTPS), restricted administrative access and regular backups. No system is completely secure, so we encourage you to share only what is necessary until we are formally engaged.
Your rights
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 you may ask to access, correct or delete your personal data, object to or restrict certain processing, ask for a copy in a portable format, and withdraw consent. Contact us at hello@fortkovant.com. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
Cookies
We use essential cookies to keep the site working (for example, to keep you signed in to your member account and protect forms from spam). We do not use cookies to sell advertising.
Website disclaimer
The articles and guides on this website explain Nigerian law in general terms. They are not a substitute for advice on your particular circumstances, and reading them, or contacting us through the website, does not by itself make us your lawyers. We become your lawyers once we have agreed the terms of an engagement with you.
Professional conduct
Our lawyers are legal practitioners in Nigeria and are bound by the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners. This website is intended to provide information about the firm in line with those rules.
