Facing dismissal? Your rights and next steps
What to do if you have been queried, suspended or dismissed — and how to protect your position.
Losing a job — or fearing you will — is stressful. Acting calmly and in writing protects your position and keeps your options open.
If you receive a query
- Read it carefully and note the deadline.
- Respond in writing, factually and politely.
- Attach supporting documents and keep copies.
If you are dismissed
- Ask for the reason and the termination letter in writing.
- Check your contract and handbook for notice, pay in lieu and benefits.
- Confirm payment of salary arrears, leave allowance and pension contributions.
- Do not sign a settlement or release until you understand it.
When to seek advice
If the dismissal did not follow the contract or a fair process, or you believe it was discriminatory or retaliatory, take advice promptly. Claims are heard by the National Industrial Court, and time limits apply.
