A first consultation is more useful when you arrive prepared. You do not need everything on this list — bring what you can, and your lawyer will help with the rest.

Documents

  • Marriage certificate (or details of the customary or Islamic marriage).
  • Children’s birth certificates.
  • Any court papers you have received.
  • A list of assets and debts — property, businesses, accounts, pensions, vehicles.
  • Recent evidence of income for both spouses, if available.

Information to think about

  • When the marriage began and when you separated (if you have).
  • The key reasons the marriage has broken down.
  • Your priorities for the children.
  • What you need financially, now and in the future.

Questions to ask

  • What are my options — and is mediation suitable?
  • How long might the process take?
  • What can I do now to protect the children and assets?
  • What will it cost?
